Inclusion terminology glossary
Language, and the fear of getting it 'wrong', is one of the biggest barriers people face when trying to understand inclusion. You can use this glossary of terms to understand any unfamiliar terms on our website. We know this can be a confusing area: CCC's consultants are on hand to guide you through it.

Equality, diversity and inclusion
Equality
Treating all people the same
Equitable / Equity
Giving extra support to one person who has been previously disadvantaged
Inclusion
An environment where all parties feel welcome and included
Intersectionality
Obstacles created by multiple disadvantages or inequalities compounding
Race / Ethnicity Terminology
Anti-racist
Actively promotes race equality by opposing all forms of racism
Microaggression
Small, subtle acts of discrimination
Racism
Discrimination based on skin colour, nationality, or ethnic or national origin
Gender / Sex Terminology
You may notice the definitions of gender and sex are missing. This is intentional, as these two words are often a source of confusion in this area of equality. Speak to one of CCC's consultants in an open, informative conversation to improve your understanding.
Cisgender
A person who still considers the gender they were assigned at birth to match with their current gender
Cisnormativity
Systems which benefit those who identify with the gender they were assigned at birth
Heteronormativity
Systems which benefit people who are 'straight' or heterosexual
LGBTQIA+
Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transexual, Queer, Intersex, Asexual and all other identities which these terms don't cover
Mysogonistic
Hatred or prejudice against women
Sexism
Discrimination based on a person's sex
Transgender
A person who identifies differently to the gender they were assigned at birth
Disability Terminology
Ableism
Discrimination that favours those who are able-bodied, or do not have a disability
Neurodivergence
A person who may have a learning difficulty or health condition such as autism
Neurotypical
A person who has typical brain function and development
Neurotypical normativity
Systems that benefit people who have not got a learning difficulty or health condition such as autism
